Retiring Mark Freeman Honored, Named 'Superintendent Emeritus'

Shaker Heights Superintendent Mark Freeman is retiring at the end of July, but not before receiving an honorary title from the school district.

Freeman, who has spent the last 25 years as superintendent and a total of 46 years with the district, was given the title of "superintendent emeritus" by the school board this week.

Board members passed a resolution honoring Freeman's "dedication to the young people of Shaker Heights and to ensuring that this is a community that still, consistently and persistently, cherishes its public schools."

The new superintendent, Gregory C. Hutchings, starts Aug. 1.
