RTA Plans New Rapid Station At Lee Road And Van Aken Boulevard

RTA wants to build a new Rapid station at Lee Road and Van Aken Boulevard in Shaker Heights.

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority wants to build a new Rapid Station at the popular Lee Road and Van Aken Boulevard stop.

Plans for a new RTA station have been underway for years but were delayed because of budget issues. Now the project is moving again and RTA is seeking approval from the Shaker Heights Planning Commission for the project.

The planning commission and city council must approve the plans because they have jurisdiction over public lands in the city.

A public hearing is scheduled for 7 p.m. Aug. 6 at City Hall.

According to RTA, the project is estimated to cost $3.5 million. They plan to put the project out for bid by the end of the year. The construction is expected to take 18 months.

The new transit station will feature elevator access, new stairs and covered pavilions for waiting passengers.

The current station was built in 1980 and has not been updated since.
