Mearns Family to Celebrate Life of Former Mayor

The event begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shaker Family Center

The life of former Shaker Heights Mayor Patricia Mearns will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Shaker Family Center on Sussex Road.

Mearns, the city's first female mayor, died last month at age 80 after battling Alzheimer's Disease. Hundreds paid respects to her legacy during a funeral service at Our Lady of Peace Church, just outside of Shaker Heights in Cleveland.

Just days after the funeral, one of Mearns' daughters, Tricia Mearns Shea, expressed gratitude to the community and its response to her mother's death.

"The police and fire departments gave the gift of their time and care these last few days to my family and we are so appreciative," she wrote on the Shaker Heights Patch Facebook page. "Every member of the staff and all departments showed us the love and respect they had for our beloved mother.

"I knew growing up here that I was a member of a special community and this past week I was reminded again and again."
