The new superintendent of Shaker Heights City Schools is in the building.

Superintendent Gregory Hutchings Jr. started Aug. 1. He replaces Mark Freeman, the longtime superintendent.

Here are five things you might not know about Hutchings:

1. Learn about Hutchings

Shaker Life Magazine has a profile of Hutchings that serves as a good introduction to the new superintendent. The article discusses his background and talks about his goals for Shaker Schools.

2. Hutchings Now Lives In Shaker 

Hutchings moved to Shaker Heights with his family in June. Since that time, he's been busy getting up to speed with the district and preparing for his leadership role.

"We appreciate the warm welcome we have received," Hutchings said in welcome letter. "It was immediately clear that Shaker residents treasure the sense of community and take great pride in the schools. We feel fortunate to be part of this very special place."

Hutchings gave a public presentation during the interview process. Shaker Schools has published a Youtube video of that presentation.

4. Read His Doctoral Dissertation

Hutchings has a doctorate in education, and Shaker Schools has posted his dissertation online. It covers "effective teaching practices in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme."
