Reader Reaction to Sarava, Sergio's Closing

Find out what your neighbors are saying about the restaurants closing.

It was announced Monday that both Sergio's and Sarava restaurants went out of business. Sergio's, on University Circle, and Sarava, on Shaker Square, managed to stay in business even after the death of owner and head chef Sergio Abramof, Cleveland Scene reported. But now that they've closed, some Shaker Heights Patch readers have shared their thoughts. Guytano Parks said: I will miss Sarava's Sunday evenings with the music of Moises Borges on the patio... William F. Cody Jr. said: Really sad for the square and its burgeoning food scene. Grotto, though still open, seems to be fading fast - wine cellar nearly empty, staff uniforms poor, broken window never fixed...hmmmm. John Smith said: I never even heard of the place and I feel sad. Shaker Has Second-Highest Property Tax Rate in Ohio

Here are the numbers that make up your property tax bill this year

Shaker Heights property taxes will rise by more than 4 mills this year, making the community the second-highest rate in the state, according to data provided by The Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com. Homeowners will pay $3,797 for every $100,000 in home value this year, up from $3,628 last year, according to the database. Overall millage stands at 123.98 this year, compared to 118.48 in 2012. Shaker's rate was second in Ohio behind a location right around the corner — the Shaker Square portion of Cleveland in the Shaker Heights School District. Despite the high ranking, the Shaker school board in October approved a five-year financial forecast that, in part, assumed that voters would approve a 9.9-mill levy in 2014. In 2012, Shaker had the …

Any attempt at a property tax levy in 2014 will be met with well-organized and well-funded opposition, including a bright spotlight of reason on the dark scare tactics of the self-serving, tax-and-spend Shaker machine. The school board would do well to begin downsizing now. Taxes have been going up in Shaker for way too long and need to start going down, not up, if we're ever going to attract and…   more ›

Aside from inordinate treats like garlic donuts and ice cream from Mitchell's, visitors enjoyed wine and beer tastings, music and face painting for kids. Proceeds supported the North Union Farmers Market's charitable efforts.

100 photographs that define Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights. Today's photographs help tell the story of Moreland Courts, 13415 Shaker Blvd. Although now condominiums, Moreland Courts was originally a luxury apartment complex. Its 15 buildings contain 147 units, and spans a block of Shaker Boulevard. The project originated with Josiah Kirby, an entrepreneur and developer who came from Wyoming, Ohio near Cincinnati. Shaker's strict zoning codes didn't allow apartments, so Kirby located the project right over the border in Cleveland at Moreland Circle. Construction started in 1922 and halted in 1923. …

Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights. Today's photograph spotlights two local retail institutions: Hough Bakeries and Marshall Drugs. Hough Bakeries was known for its fine foods. It's been 20 years since the company abruptly closed its stores and headquarters, but the mention of a Hough cake still makes mouths water. Lionel Pile founded the company as Hough Home Bakery in 1903 with four employees. At its height in the 1980s, it had 28 branches in the Greater Cleveland area.  The branch pictured was located in the Marshall Drugs store in Shaker Square. The company started as a …
