Shaker Heights Schools: District Has 'Comprehensive Crisis Plans' in Place

The local school district writes a memo to parents following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.

In the aftermath of the tragic elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., Shaker Heights Schools officials want to assure parents that the district has a crisis plan in place. According to a memo posted this afternoon on the district's website, the district developed crisis plans in conjunction with the city's police and fire departments. "These plans are reviewed and updated on a regular basis," the memo reads. "We hope that we never need to use these procedures in a real-life crisis, but if a situation arises, we will be as well prepared as possible." 27 Dead in Connecticut School Shooting

Police in Newtown, Conn. were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 a.m. after a gunman allegedly opened fire at the school. The president spoke to the nation Friday afternoon.

Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire.   The Scene Newtown Police were called to the school at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. They alerted Connecticut State Police and authorities began an active shooter investigation once they arrived at the school, according to Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. He was allegedly armed with four guns and a high-powered assault rifle.
