The Board of Education approved over $600,000 in contracts for a science lab and a new planetarium projector and software
Shaker Heights High School will get a new science lab and improvements to irs planetarium, thanks to $615,000 in contracts awarded at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting. The board approved a $380,250 contract with Sterling Professional Group to convert a Shaker High classroom into a science lab. Superintendent Mark Freeman noted that state requirements for science labs in public schools have changed, and a lack of lab space in the school causes scheduling problems for the school's science teachers. New equipment and software for the planetarium will be purchased from Spitz, Inc. at $235,745. University School violinist receives Emerging Artist Award; joins ranks of Akron natives The Black Keys, Andrea Levy
A Shaker Heights teen will be honored as one of the region's best artists at the Cleveland Arts Prize ceremony next month. Chad Hoopes, a student at the University School in Hunting Valley, will be presented with the Emerging Artist award at the Cleveland Museum of Art in June. Hoopes, a violinist, won the Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in 2008 at age 13. He's played with the Cleveland Orchestra as well as several others in the U.S. and Canada. Last year, he signed with a French record label and is expected to release an album this fall. Students from Shaker Heights won $2,500 in scholarships.
Seven students from Shaker Heights have been announced as National Merit Scholarship winners. Here are the names of students who are either from Shaker Heights or attend school in the community: National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors

The school will host a percussion ensemble at Cleveland's Severance Hall on Sunday.
Boys playing with hammers sounds like a worrisome proposition, unless they are members of the Flying Mallets, a percussion ensemble of lower school boys at University School’s Shaker Campus. Playing wooden xylophones, metal glockenspiels and other instruments, the happy band of third, fourth and fifth graders will perform on Sunday, May 12, from 1:00-1:45 p.m., in Reinberger Auditorium at Severance Hall . The performance is part of the pre-concert activities for the Cleveland Orchestra Family Concert, which begins at 2:00 pm. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. Two local students earned scholarship money in the Maltz Museum Stop the Hate Essay Contest.
Two Shaker Heights High School students are among the 10 finalists in the “Stop the Hate” contest. Shaker Heights students Evelyn Ting, a senior, and Abby White, a sophomore, landed among the 10 finalists for their essays to stop hatred, as part of the 5th annual Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage Stop the Hate: Youth Speak Out! contest. The students Shaker Heights Middle School and High School continued to prove their historical acumen at Ohio History Day. Overall, 33 of the 47 Shaker students who participated in 26 different projects at Ohio History Day were recognized as national finalists, alternates or honorable mentions. Ohio History Day is part of the National History Day competition in which students perform extensive research to develop an original thesis and demonstrate their knowledge and conclusions about a specific historical theme. This year’s theme was “Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events.” The final projects of students -- who could work by themselves or in groups -- included documentary videos, dramatic performances and formal term papers.
