Shaker Falls to Solon, 24-21, In Last Second Heartbreaker

The Solon Comets defeated Shaker Heights 24-21, overcoming an 11 point deficit in less than three minutes.

The Shaker Heights Red Raiders had some big plays, but they weren't enough to overcome the Solon Comets.

Solon defeated Shaker Heights, 24-21, with a 46-yard pass with 19 seconds to go to hand the Red Raiders a heartbreaking loss. It's Shaker's ninth straight loss to Solon.

Shaker Heights led 21-10 with 2:36 left in the game, after Quarterback Jimmie Pope completed a 69 yard touchdown pass to Nolan Jackson-Daniel to give the team an 11-point lead.

But then Solon running back and kick returner Khoury Crenshaw returned the kickoff for 62 yards into Shaker territory. Solon then went to work, and Quarterback Drew Barksdale connected to Receiver Darian Hicks for a 38 yards and a touchdown.

The Comets attempted an onside kick, which failed, but the defense was able to stop the Red Raiders on four straight plays. The Comets got the ball back on their own 17 yard line with 54 seconds left in the game.

Then 35 seconds later, Barksdale threw it to Hicks for the win.

Big plays kept Shaker in the game. Defenesive back Trey Johnson returned a Solon interception for a touchdown in the third quarter. Pope also connected with receiver Mel Leach for a 82 yard touchdown pass in the fourth.
