Hockey Coach Mike Bartley Retires

Mike Bartley is retiring as Shaker Heights hockey coach with more wins than any other coach in Ohio.

One of Ohio's greatest high school coaches is retiring.

Shaker Heights Hockey Coach Mike Bartley told the Cleveland Plain Dealer he is retiring after 37 years and coaching more than 1,000 hockey games and winning four state championships.

He is retiring from coaching high school and youth hockey. He declined to say why he was retiring, only adding that his decision was well thought out.

"I want to take a little time away from the game," Bartley told the newspaper.

Bartley has coached and won more hockey games than any other coach in Ohio.

In March, after winning his fourth state championship with his son at his side as a coach, Bartley told Shaker Heights Patch that his coaching style is all about education.

"Athletics, in my opinion, plays an important role in our education system, provided that it’s approached properly," Bartley said. "It has long-term value in the development of student athletes. They can learn a lot of things about teamwork and perseverance and dedication. There’s a lot to learn in athletics and it’s not just winning."
