What's Shaker Heights City Schools' Crisis Plan?

Shaker Heights Schools have complied with state law regarding crisis plans, a spokesperson said Monday.

Peggy Caldwell said that the district conducted lockdown drills this fall, and work closely with the Shaker Heights Police Department on safety measures.

School safety is a hot topic of discussion following a 

NewsNet5 reported Monday that many Northeast Ohio school districts have not sent the Ohio Attorney General’s Office updated floor plans, or that they are illegible. Shaker Heights is not one of those districts.

The district’s contingency plan involves first making sure students are safe —  meaning that if there is a lockdown necessary, to get students quiet and in classrooms with the doors closed.

The police department has copies of all eight of the schools' floorplans.

As soon as it is possible, the district will notify parents of the lockdown through the website, emails, and robocalls to parents. The district uses the same system it uses for snow days and other important messages, so parents should ensure that the district has their correct contact information.
