Shaker Heights Schools to Add Science Lab, Upgrade Planetarium

The Board of Education approved over $600,000 in contracts for a science lab and a new planetarium projector and software

Shaker Heights High School will get a new science lab and improvements to irs planetarium, thanks to $615,000 in contracts awarded at Tuesday's Board of Education meeting.

The board approved a $380,250 contract with Sterling Professional Group to convert a Shaker High classroom into a science lab.

Superintendent Mark Freeman noted that state requirements for science labs in public schools have changed, and a lack of lab space in the school causes scheduling problems for the school's science teachers.

New equipment and software for the planetarium will be purchased from Spitz, Inc. at $235,745. The proect will be funded nearly in whole by private funding from the district's Huntington Bank partnership, the Shaker Schools Foundation and the Arminius Foundation.

The board unanimously approved the contracts. Both projects will be completed this summer.
