Fernway & Onaway Schools Receive International Baccalaureate Authorization

All five elementary schools in the Shaker Heights School District are now authorized by the International Baccalaureate World Schools

Fernway and Onaway elementary schools have been authorized as International Baccalaureate World Schools, according to the Shaker Schools web site.

This means all five elementary schools in the school district are now authorized by the International Baccalaureate World Schools.

The International Baccalaureate is a nonprofit educational foundation that offers four, curriculum-based programs. The programs encompass the primary years (for students from ages 3 to 12,) middle years (11 to 16) and high school years with both Diploma Program and IB career-related certificate.

To become authorized by the IB, the Shaker elementary schools underwen an intensive site inspection.

"The schools were required to demonstrate that they have collaboratively developed and are consistently teaching the globally focused interdisciplinary units, using inquiry and problem solving strategies as instructional approaches, as well as meeting rigorous requirements for student assessment," the district said on its web site.

Beyond the elementary schools, the middle and high school have also earned Candidate Status from the IB.

The district graduated its first group of Diploma candidates last spring.
