Shaker Schools Could Lose $200,000 After Sequestration

What federal budget cuts of $85 million could mean for Shaker Schools

Shaker Heights Schools face uncertain cuts after the U.S. Senate did not agree on legislation that would stop $85 billion in budget cuts before it adjourned for the weekend Thursday night.

Shaker Schools treasurer Bryan Christman estimates that sequestration could cost the Shaker schools up to $200,000 in federal money — including special education funding and Title I funding for disadvantaged children — that would have to be absorbed by the general fund.

"Whether that would all happen at once is not certain at this time because of the timing of the education funding cycle," said spokesperson Peggy Caldwell. "We can’t say with certainty exactly what will happen and when.

But cuts in mental health, public health, child care, and Head Start contribute to children's "well-being and willingness to learn," Caldwell added, will have indirect impacts on the school system.
