Self-Storage Proposal Revived; Before City Council Wednesday

Shaker Heights city council will hear a proposal Wednesday to turn a defunct car dealership into a self-storage facility.

The proposal at 16005 Chagrin Boulevard had previously been denied by city planners because such storage facilities were not permitted under the zoning code and city officials did not want a storage facility in a city gateway.

But city officials have reconsidered and now are set to allow self storage facilities in certain business districts on a conditional basis, which would, according to a city memo, "minimize impacts on neighboring properties so as not to produce environmental impacts or create a nuisance."

The legislation to amend the zoning code was introduced before city council earlier this month and will have its second reading Wednesday night.

Then there would be a public hearing a third and final reading in July.
