UPDATE: Neighbor Says Smell of Smoke from Daleford House Fire Was 'Overbearing'

UPDATED at 6 p.m. on Tuesday

Shaker Heights Police reported that the two who died in the Daleford Road house fire were adults, a man and a woman. 

They added that it took at least a couple of hours before visible flames on this house fire were out.

Most neighbors say they did not know the family very well and were tight-lipped about the fire.

Lindsey Barnhart, who said she lives a couple blocks away, said the smell of smoke woke her up this morning.

"The smell of smoke was pretty overbearing," said Barnhart, who has lived in the neighborhood for several years. "It's horrible. It's always hard to see in your backyard."

One neighbor said she woke up to people screaming while some of the victims were still inside the home. She said she dialed 9-1-1 and began knocking on neighbors' doors. Other neighbors said they saw people on the front lawn screaming.

Smoke was still visible on the house at 10:45 a.m. and the road is expected to remain closed for at least a couple days, police said.

The Cuyahoga County Auditor's Office shows that Gregory Phillips owns the home. Shaker Heights Housing Inspection Director Bill Hanson said a certificate of occupancy was issued for the home on Oct. 26, indicating that the owner rented the property out.

Update from 11:50 a.m. on Tuesday

Two people died in a house fire in Shaker Heights last night.

The fire was reported at 4:02 a.m. at 3333 Daleford Road, Shaker Heights Fire said.

Two people were found dead at the scene and five others were transported to the hospital. Two firefighters were also transported to the hospital.

According to the Cuyahoga County Auditor's office, the home is owned by Gregory J. Phillips, but it remains unclear who was in the home at the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross of Greater Cleveland Distaster Action Team also reported to the scene, spokeswoman Megan S. Koeth said. Caseworkers are meeting with extended family members at an area hospital to provide food and clothing assistance.

Koeth said Red Cross has already received some calls from neighbors who want to help out. The agency will pass contact information to the family members so they can respond if they choose to. Red Cross of Greater Cleveland can be reached at 216-431-3010
