The victim's daughter chased the purse snatcher but he ultimately escaped

Shaker Heights Police are looking for a thief who snatched a purse from a car in the parking lot of the Shaker Heights Public Library.

The theft occurred at 9:40 a.m. Tuesday.

The victim had gone inside the library, leaving her purse, adult daughter and granddaughter in the car.

A young black man -- thought to be between the ages of 16 and 19 -- opened the unlocked car door and took the purse from the front seat.

He hadn't noticed the two people still in the car, Shaker Heights Police Lt. Jeffrey DeMuth said.

The daughter chased the suspect but he ultimately escaped.

Witnesses described the thief as being 5'6'' to 5'8'' tall and weighing between 135 and 145 pounds. He wore a gray jacket and black skull cap that morning.
