Shaker Heights Interim Fire Chief Appointed

Pat Sweeney stepped into role this month after retirement of Kevin Jacobs

Shaker Heights Fire has a new interim chief.

Pat Sweeney, who's been with the department for 27 years and spearheads the Heights Area Special Rescue Team, began as interim chief April 1 after Kevin Jacobs' retirement.

He will serve as the chief until the city appoints a permanent chief.

Sweeney started with the department in 1986 and was promoted to lieutenant in 1994, then battalion chief in October 2012.

The special rescue team he helped found and now heads is a 40-person team that is trained for unusual rescues, like from high elevations or in confined spaces.

His father also served as a firefighter, and his brother is a firefighter in Cleveland Heights.
