RTA Driver Struck in Shaker Heights

Driver hit by man trying to board without paying.

An RTA bus driver was assaulted in Shaker Heights Thursday.

The two men tried to board at Chagrin Boulevard and Lee Road without paying, Shaker Heights Police said. After the driver asked for their fares, one man got off, and the other hit the driver. Both men fled.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

Police said they have turned this investigation over to RTA Police.

The assault comes weeks after a video of a fight between RTA driver Artis Hughes and passenger Shidea Lane — ending with Hughes uppercutting Lane — on a bus in Beachwood went viral.

Following that attack, the bus driver union and city officials including the possibility of enclosing the driver's seat in a plexiglass booth.
