Shaker Heights Resident Contracts West Nile Virus

The 54-year-old resident has not reported any neurological effects after mosquito bite

The Shaker Heights Health Department confirmed Tuesday that a resident has contracted the West Nile Virus.

The 54-year-old resident reported a fever, fatigue, nausea, a rash and muscle aches after being bitten by a mosquito, according to a city statement. The unnamed resident has not reported any neurological effects.

There are 695 WNV-positive mosquito pools as of Aug. 13, according to the Ohio Department of Health. The department said this summer’s prolonged heat is a main reason for the increase. In 2002, there were 299 WNV positive pools by the end of July.
