Register for the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes Hike & Run on Saturday

Register online for the mix of hiking and running online or at the event at 8 a.m. Saturday

An event Saturday at the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes will offer a mix of competitive running and calm strolls through Shaker Heights and Cleveland Heights.

The 7th annual Shaker Lakes Hike & Run offers exercise opportunities for avid and adventurous runners, pet owners and more. The event is highlighted by a 5K race with a trail along North Park and South Park boulevards, around the lower Shaker Lakes.

"It's shaded, but not really hilly," said Lisa Fredrickson, events manager at the Nature Center of Shaker Lakes.

The event also offers four different hikes. One is a one-mile hike in which participants are encouraged to bring their pets. Another is four miles along the Shaker parklands and Doan Brook. The lengthiest hike extends 12 miles from the Nature Center, along Martin Luther King Boulevard to the The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve.

The 12 mile-hike will be led by the Cleveland Hiking Club and lasts about four hours.

"It's not undo-able," Fredrickson said of the long hike. "They do stop along the way."

The hikes cost $13 for adults and $10 for children under 12. The race costs $22 to register. That price includes a free t-shirt and refreshments upon completion.

The hikes begin at 9 a.m., while the runners will take off at 9:15 a.m. The event benefits the Jenny Goldman Environmental Educator in Residence program.

Event-day registration begins at 8 a.m., but you can still register online here.
