No. 4 Top Story of 2012: Panera Closes

This was the fourth most-read story this year on Shaker Heights Patch

It was the closing heard all around the city.

Panera Bread confirmed in mid-November that it would be closing its Shaker Heights location, formerly at 20060 Van Aken Blvd. The company said it was replacing the Shaker Heights Panera with the new site at Cedar Center in South Euclid.

Panera served its last baked goods, sandwiches and coffees in Shaker on Nov. 21.

Readers on Shaker Heights Patch and Facebook seemed as angry with this closure as any in recent history. Economic Development Director Tania Menesse said she was sensitive to residential concerns, but had no news to report on a potential new tenant.

"Right now, it's very well set up for food," she said in November. "It would be really nice to see investment in the area. That's what the community is looking for, food and entertainment.
