100 Years in 100 Days: Shaker Heights Rose Garden

100 photographs that define Shaker Heights

Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.

Today's photo shows the Shaker Heights Rose Garden in 1931, just six years after its creation. Frederick Bruce, a member of the Cleveland Rose Society, solicited donations for the garden. He raised enough money to buy 2,000 plants. Charles Schneider designed the garden, and the donated land between Onaway and schools.

Over the years, however, interest in the garden waned and volunteers dropped off. Several years ago, many of the rose bushes were replaced with perennials. Still, a team of volunteers works on the garden almost every Saturday, Nikki Evans said.
