Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.
Today's photo features Roger Penske, the Shaker Heights High School Class of 1955, who heads Penske Corporation. CNN Money calls the company a "transportation empire that (Penske) created from scratch — as well as a racing organization that is one of history's most successful."
Penske played football when he was in high school, but he got involved in automobile racing while attending Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He had a successful career as a race car driver, but his attention turned to business when he bought a Chevrolet dealership at 28 years.
He founded Penske Corporation in 1969. The privately held company claims revenues of more than $16 billion and has 16,000 workers, according to CNN Money.
