Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.

No, Shaker Square is not in Shaker Heights.

But the Van Sweringen brothers had the city in mind when they developed the octagon-shaped center just down the road, according to an entry about the area on Cleveland Historical. And the Shaker Square Historic District became a Shaker Heights landmark in 1980.

Shaker Heights once had zoning laws that barred the city from building apartment buildings and commercial structures, according to Cleveland Historical. So Shaker Square was erected in nearby Cleveland and opened in 1929, and was meant to serve as a "gateway" to the east side suburb.

The photo included with this article depicts Shaker Square Travel. The business sure got the attention of customers and window shoppers young and old when it used a large lion in its front window to advertise an African safari in 1943.
