Holiday Shopping on Larchmere: Gentleman's Quarters & Frog's Legs

These connected businesses specialize in high-end European apparel and accessories

Editor's note: In this three-part series, Shaker Heights Patch will talk to a Larchmere Boulevard merchant about holiday shopping about buying from local businesses.

Gentleman's Quarters owner Walter Thompson readily admits his clothing store "is not for everybody."

For example, Thompson says his customers are the type who would rather buy a few $65 plain white undershirts that will last for years as opposed to packs of shirts made by recognizable brands like Hanes. Such shirts are certainly among the cheaper items found at GQ, but that hasn't prevented Thompson from securing a trusted base of clients who return for his luxury items.

GQ has been around since 1969. The shop shares its Larchmere space with Frog's Legs, which carries jewelry, scarfs, purses and other accessories.

Frog's Legs owner Susan Geller also has to rely on longtime customers to support the business. Some potential customers shy away from her hefty pricetags. She said she pitches them an opportunity to sport a personalized style that differs from trends.

"I can do something for the lawyer lady who needs a lacy camisole sticking out on top, to somebody who wants to get a little more funky with the bright red," Geller said.

Christmas shopping isn't necessarily a cash cow at GQ and Frog's Legs, as Thompson estimates that nearly 80 percent of his clientele is Jewish. Still, the shops will try to attract business with annual winter sale that begins on Wednesday. Clothing and accessories will be marked at 20 to 70 percent off. Some sweaters will be 60 percent off. GQ also carries suits, shirts and jeans.

"Sales are the best time to buy this stuff," Geller said. "There's always something available."
