Shaker Library Seeks Volunteer Drivers to Help Homebound Patrons

The library wants to reach more residents who are unable to visit its branches

The Shaker Library hopes to find help in the community as it tries to reach readers unable to visit its branches.

The library is seeking volunteer drivers to deliver books and other media to homebound patrons, according to its website. The drivers would make biweekly deliveries from either the main branch or Bertram Woods to a patron's home.

"It is a wonderful way to connect with someone, you're bringing the world to them when you bring them a bag of book," library spokeswoman Margaret Simon said. "Anybody can do it, and it can be whenever."

The driver would coordinate with the homebound individual, make deliveries and then return to the library with previous materials that needed to be returned.

Drivers would determine when and how often they can make deliveries.

Simon said there isn't a large list of people looking for delivered materials, but the library hopes to expand the program.

"Anybody who is homebound, we'd love to deliver books to them," she said, "but we can't expnd the program until we can expand our drivers."
