No Fourth of July Fireworks In Shaker Heights This Year

There are no Fourth of July fireworks in Shaker Heights this year.

Shaker Heights will not hold a fireworks show this Fourth of July after the annual event was canceled late last year.

The fireworks were canceled in December after Mayor Earl Leiken said the city has been having problems during the show.

"There have been problems in maintaining order and dealing with huge numbers of young people who have shown up through social media at the fireworks and who have been disruptive," he said in December. "It has generated a deep concern about public safety."

The city has said it will hold events on the Fourth for Shaker families in lieu of fireworks. For example, the city plans a Water Carnival at Thornton Park Pool.
