5 Things You Need A Permit For In Shaker Heights

Here are five permits you may need to obtain in Shaker Heights.

1. Building Permits -- Maintaining a historic Shaker Heights home can be a lot of work, and if you are contemplating home repairs or upgrades, you may need permits and permissions before you begin your project. The best thing to do is contact the city building department at 216-491-1460 before you start anything.

2. Block Parties -- You don't need a permit per se, but you do need city permission to host a block party. You will need to register your party at least two weeks before the party to close the street. You will need a permit for a tent, which you can obtain from the Shaker Heights Fire

3. Community Garden -- The city encourages residents to start community gardens, and depending on the plans, may require permits and other permissions. Learn more at the city's community gardening website.

4. Commercial Occupancy Permits -- If you are opening a new business or relocating to a new storefront, you will need a commerical occupancy permit, which is accompanied by an inspection. Contact the economic development department at 216-491-1334 with any questions.

5. Weddings -- Both Mayor Earl Leiken and Judge K.J. Montgomery can perform weddings. At least one of the engaged couple must be a Shaker resident, and provide proof of residency before the ceremony. Learn more about having a city official perform your wedding at the city website.
