The Shaker Historical Society (SHS), 16740 South Park Blvd. in Shaker Heights, OH proudly presents a lecture entitled “An Afternoon with President Lincoln” on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 3:00 pm.
Listen, learn and travel back in time to 1865 to hear President Lincoln talk about his life, beliefs, policies, and the Civil War as it nears its end. Living historian, Mel Maurer, will be portraying President Abraham Lincoln.
Maurer’s presentation starts with the scenario of Lincoln’s wife Mary. In her efforts to raise money for soldiers and their families, Mary has committed Lincoln to a talk at a fundraiser before an audience in Washington DC at Ford’s Theater. His words will provide insight into that era, seasoned with his characteristic sense of humor. President Lincoln also takes questions from the audience after his remarks and all are encouraged to participate.
Mel Maurer is a graduate of John Carroll University. Now retired, Mel previously held various management positions with the Boston Weatherhead Division of Dana Corporation. In retirement he writes, speaks, and is active in civic and charitable organizations. Mel is a past President of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable and is currently its Historian. He is also a member of the Lincoln Forum and the Westlake Historical Society. Maurer has made presentations on a number of Civil War topics, with a special emphasis on Lincoln. He also writes articles on a wide range of interest for the “Charger,” the journal of the Cleveland Civil War Roundtable.
