Jaywalking Leads to Arrest for Teen
Shaker Heights Police arrest teen after he refused to cooperate.
Police say that a teen walking in the street ended up in juvenile detention after he refused to cooperate with an officer.
The teen male was seen by a Shaker Heights Police officer jaywalking. When the officer approached the boy and asked him for identification, the teen refused, and the officer moved to arrest him. The teen resisted arrest, wriggling and not complying with the officer’s orders.
He was charged with resisting arrest and obstructing justice and issued a traffic citation.

If I were cited every time I jaywalked, I'd be in prison by now. It's ridiculous to arrest a kid for this offense when there's so much else going on in Shaker Heights.

From the article, it sounds like the officer was giving the kid a chance to correct his behavior. Also the article says that he was "walking in the street." Does this mean that he was strolling down the center line? If the teen had willingly complied with the officer's requests, he probably wouldn't have gotten a ticket. I side with the officer. I've been pulled over twice by Shaker Heights police officers, and both times, they were right to do so. I pay taxes to keep my city safe, and I'm glad to see my police officers doing a good job, even if it means that I have to pay a big fine. Thank you, SHPD, for all that you do!

Dear Shaker Mom,
While I agree with you for the most part, why would an officer ask for identification? Why not just ask the kid to get on the sidewalk?
