Shaker Heights Patch is celebrating the 100 years of Shaker Heights history by creating an online scrapbook. Each day for 100 days, we'll feature a photograph that helps tell the story of Shaker Heights.

Today's photo features Malcolm Brown, an artist who operated The Malcolm Brown Gallery on Chagrin Boulevard for 30 years. Brown and his wife, Ernestine Turner Brown, built a business that gained a national reputation for the caliber of its exhibits.

 Their gallery was dedicated to African-American artists, and featured such notables as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett and Selma Burke. Burke created the profile of Franklin Delano Roosevelt that is on the dime. The couple closed the gallery in 2011. Area artist Erica Weiss will open a new art gallery this fall in Malcolm Brown's old space.
