Guitarist Robert Gruca with the BlueWater String Quartet in Shaker Heights Jan 20

Cleveland Classical Guitar Society (CCGS) teams up with BlueWater Chamber Orchestra to present guitarist Robert Gruca with the BlueWater String Quartet in concert. This is the 4th Masters Series event in CCGS’s 2012-2013 season.

The concert’s unique and varied program includes solo guitar works, violin and guitar duets with concertmaster Ken Johnston, and works for guitar with string quartet. Gruca and Johnston are local talents and have become audience favorites among Clevelanders. Gruca has made several appearances in previous CCGS concerts. He has won several first-place prize competitions including the Appalachian State Guitar Festival Competition and has toured the eastern United States and Europe with the Cleveland Orchestra performing Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 under the direction of Franz Welser-Most. Gruca just released a recording of Handel guitar arrangements on MSR Classics.

Ken Johnston is the Concertmaster of both the BlueWater Chamber Orchestra and the Erie Philharmonic. He has played with the Akron, Canton, Youngstown, and Cleveland Pops Orchestras of Ohio, as well as the Virginia Symphony and the Wheeling Symphony of West Virginia. Donald Rosenberg of the Plain Dealer remarked that Johnston “triumphed whenever he touched bow to strings.”

The concert takes place on Sunday, January 20 at First Unitarian Church of Cleveland at 21600 Shaker Blvd in Shaker Heights. Concert begins at 3:00 P.M.
